Summary of Candidate Professional/Civic Background:

I am currently serving my fourth term in the Texas House of Representatives, representing House District 47 in Austin. I’m a member of the Appropriations Committee and the Insurance Committee, and have served on numerous other committees. I am a small business owner and a residential real estate broker. I own Goodwin & Goodwin Real Estate. Prior to being a Representative, I served on two HOA boards and on multiple civic club boards.

Why would you be an effective leader in this role?

Over the nearly eight years I’ve served in the Texas Legislature, I have built relationships with other Representatives and Senators. The Dean of the Senate, Senator Zaffirini, passed my drowning prevention bill, Cati’s Act, and hosted me for a press conference in her hometown of Laredo. I passed Senator West’s food resiliency law, and collaborated with Senator Alvarado on the Natalia Cox Act, a violence prevention law. Being effective relies on having relationships with the people you work with, and I already have those relationships.

What are three platform points that are important to you?

My top three priorities are: 1) Increasing funding for public schools and ending the voucher program; 2) ensuring all Texans can access the healthcare they need affordably; and 3) updating water law ensuring we can meet our water needs without driving up the cost.

My work has contributed to the development of clearly established constitutional rights and has been recognized at the highest levels of the legal profession.

In 2023, my career transitioned into public service and serving the People of Texas as a staff attorney for the Fifth District Court of Appeals.

Now I’m running for a seat on Houston’s Fourteenth Court of Appeals to protect the rights of the People and zealously guard the rule of law and the Constitution.

Summary of Candidate Professional/Civic Background:

I have a master’s degree in English and educational administration, and twelve years of experience as a classroom teacher in grades 7-12 ELA. I also worked in higher education as the Assistant Director of Study Abroad at Lamar University, and I currently manage an online tutoring business where I’ve taught hundreds of kids from all over the U.S. and abroad.

Why would you be an effective leader in this role?

I believe it’s my boots on the ground experience as an educator that makes me an effective leader for this role. For too long decisions about education have been made by people without education experience, and it’s time to put educators back in charge of the field.

What are three platform points that are important to you?

My biggest platform points are ensuring a curriculum that is balanced, objective, and not influenced in political or religious ideology; properly funding our education system that has been underfunded for too long, and maintaining local control of our school ISDs.

Congratulations to Mayor Quentin Wiltz

The Brazoria County Democratic Party proudly congratulates Quentin Wiltz, the first Democratic‑endorsed candidate in decades to win the office of Mayor of Pearland, the 15th‑largest city in Texas — and the city’s first Black mayor. This historic victory reflects the strength, vision, and integrity Quentin brings to public service and the trust Pearland voters have placed in him.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the volunteers, contributors, and community members who worked tirelessly to help voters see Quentin for the great leader he is. Your dedication, conversations, and countless hours of effort made this moment possible.

Positive change is never easy. It demands diligent work, active engagement, and shared commitment from all of us — in our neighborhoods, civic spaces, and every election. This victory shows that Pearland and Brazoria County are ready for change, but realizing that promise will take effort, grit, heart, and yes, resources to carry this same energy into November both at the ballot box and in city hall.

We also recognize and thank the many outstanding candidates who stepped forward to serve. Their courage, dedication, and commitment to our community embody the very best of public service, and we are proud to stand with each of them.

We extend our warm congratulations to Toni Carter, Pearland ISD Trustee Position 1; Jason A. Albert, Manvel Councilmember Place 5; Margaret Madariaga, Iowa Colony Councilmember Position 1; Arnetta Murray, Iowa Colony Councilmember Position 2; and Marguette Greene‑Scott, Iowa Colony Councilmember Position 3 on their victories. Their leadership will strengthen our communities in meaningful ways.

Our county also continues to need the passion and service of leaders like Faynetta (Fay) Burrle, T’Liza Kiel, Melanie Oldham, Toshila McLean, and Azania Salazar, and we deeply appreciate each of them for giving their all in this election. Their willingness to step forward reflects a commitment to community that deserves recognition and gratitude.

Together, we celebrate this milestone and recommit ourselves to building a better, fairer future for all.

— Brazoria County Democratic Party

P.S. If you’d like to help us keep this momentum going, consider making a contribution to support our year‑round voter engagement and community outreach efforts. Every bit truly helps us continue this work.

Texas Senate 11-Shannon Dicely

Campaign Social Media: Facebook, Instagram

Summary of Candidate Professional/Civic Background:

I currently work at Lone Star College in the Center for Civic Engagement planning programs that get young voters interested and involved in the election process. In addition, I have worked locally on campaigns for several election cycles now. In December, I graduated with my master’s in political science from Sam Houston State University—a 20-year gap since completing my undergrad. I spent that time studying how our system works with a focus on voting and voting rights. At the same time, I remained very active in my community with volunteer work with Girls Scouts, Moms Demand Action, TDW-GC, and Meals on Wheels. Past volunteer work included being a founding member of Young Dems of Galveston County and seven years on my neighborhoods POA board.

Why would you be an effective leader in this role?

I believe my deep roots in the community give me a good understanding of the needs in this district. Having taken the Oath of the Politician’s Creed this month, I have publicly expressed my values both in running this campaign as well as how I would act as State Senator—with honesty, transparency, integrity, and accountability. I plan to always properly represent the constituents in SD-11 by putting their needs above all else and protecting the vulnerable in our community. As I have sought endorsements from current community leaders and legislators, I have begun creating networks of mentors that would help usher me into the role after the election. I know that my abilities to effectively communicate and make personal connections all while caring deeply for this community would make me an effective leader in this role.

What are three platform points that are important to you?

As I have knocked doors, I found that the issues that voters are most concerned about are affordability, public education, and healthcare. As a mom and a breast cancer survivor, these priorities are also my lived experience. Families are being priced out of their homes all while having to choose between buying groceries or gas. We need to tackle this from both ends—finally increase the minimum wage after over 15 years and regulating insurance so that people and business owners stop being priced out of their properties. Our public education system has been attacked strategically for decades. It is time we fulfill the promise of our state constitution and adequately fund our schools. I will fight to raise the per student allotment and to give teachers the significant pay raise and benefits they deserve. I am and will always be committed to listening to educators to create and pass legislation that helps them in tangible ways. Public education is the great equalizer and all Texans deserve a quality education regardless of background or circumstance as promised. Texas leads the nation in people without health insurance and has a higher than national average maternal and infant mortality rate. With some of the nation’s top-ranked hospitals within and near the district, Texas should be leading the nation in healthcare. I will fight to expand access to health insurance at the state level including Medicaid expansion.

Justice, 14th Court of Appeals, Place 7-Michael Adams Hurta

Campaign Email: info@adams-hurta.com

Campaign Website: www.adams-hurta.com

Summary of Candidate Professional/Civic Background:

Michael Adams-Hurta is a native Texan, lifelong Democrat, and experienced appeals attorney. Michael started his career working for two distinguished judges – a federal judge in Laredo, TX and then a justice on the Texas Supreme Court. Now, Michael is the partner at Texas’s largest appellate law firm, where he practices in courts of appeals and other appellate courts like the 14th Court almost every day. He’s written over 100 appellate briefs and attended numerous trials as special appellate counsel, as well. He has worked on a broad range of cases, from criminal law to family law to business disputes. And he is the only candidate in this race (including the Republican incumbent) who is a board certified appellate attorney—Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, a distinction held by fewer than 1% of attorneys. In his professional capacity, he is proud to have fought Ken Paxton and defended constitutional rights. He has also dedicated volunteer time as a lawyer to voter protection programs. He hopes to continue defending your rights as a justice on the 14th Court of Appeals.

Why would you be an effective leader in this role?

As an experienced appellate attorney, I’m highly qualified to be a justice on this Court. That makes me both the best candidate to beat a Republican in November and to work with the Republican justices who remain on the 14th Court after the 2026 elections. All 9 justices on the 14th Court are currently Republicans, even though Democrats won seats on this Court in 2018. I want to knock on doors in Brazoria County in the fall as your nominee for this Court. Then, once elected, I’ll have the experience and credibility to work alongside the Republican majority on that Court.

What platform points that are important to you?

Accountability. While most lawsuits are apolitical, some are not. The Fourteenth Court needs a strong independent voie when political pressure arises. That judge should work to persuade his fellow judges when the time calls for it but vigorously dissent if the people’s rights are disregarded. I’ll do just that.

Justice for the People. Judicial candidates love to say they will just “follow the law,” but that is not always so simple. While that is the principal responsibility of any judge, almost every case an appellate judge decides has a bona fide dispute about the meaning or application of “the law.” On close questions, judges must remember that their job is to read the law in the context of our democracy. As a justice, I will always bear in mind that my job is as a mere cog in our democracy, simply interpreting and applying laws passed by and for the People.

Empathy towards all advocates and parties. All sorts of people will show up in the courtroom. Most will be unfamiliar with the court of appeals, too. Yet as a part of their government, they still deserve the full consideration and understanding. So I will work hard to treat every person as fairly and respectfully as possible.

Judicial Election Candidate Profiles

Judicial elections in Texas give voters direct power over the judges who shape how justice works at every level of daily life.

Because Texas elects nearly all of these judges in partisan elections, voters play a decisive role in ensuring the courts are fair, competent, and reflective of their community’s values.

Justice of the Peace

A Justice of the Peace (JP) is one of the most community‑focused elected officials in Texas. JP courts handle small civil disputes, traffic and fine‑only cases, evictions, truancy matters, and key early steps in the criminal justice process such as issuing warrants and setting bail. JPs can also perform weddings. In Brazoria County—where there is no Medical Examiner—the Justice of the Peace is additionally responsible for conducting inquests and determining cause of death in certain situations. Because their decisions affect housing stability, school attendance, and everyday interactions with the justice system, this office has a direct impact on families and neighborhoods.

Candidates: William Cook (JP Pct. 1, Plc. 2), Shenequa Harrison (JP Pct. 2, Plc. 2), Mark Wright (JP Pct. 3, Plc. 2), Stephanie Baird (JP Pct. 4, Plc. 2)

County Court Judges

A Brazoria County Court Judge handles many of the everyday legal matters that directly affect residents, serving as a key part of the county’s justice system. These judges oversee probate cases, guardianships, misdemeanors, juvenile matters, and certain civil disputes, ensuring that local cases are resolved fairly and efficiently. They also manage administrative responsibilities within their courts and work closely with county agencies to keep the justice process moving. Because so many cases stop at the county level, these judges play an essential role in how justice is delivered across Brazoria County.

Candidates: Matt Muller (County Court at Law, No. 2)

Judge, Court of Appeals Districts
