Justice of the Peace

A Justice of the Peace (JP) handles small civil cases, traffic and fine‑only offenses, evictions, truancy, and early steps in the criminal process like issuing warrants and setting bail. JPs can perform weddings, and in Brazoria County they also conduct inquests. Their decisions directly affect housing, school attendance, and everyday interactions with the justice system.
